Here are five storylines to watch for Wednesday's match against Charlotte:

A Viking’s Influence

Orlando’s recent defensive progress has aligned closely with the return of center back Robin Jansson, whose leadership and organization have steadied the back line. Jansson has helped tighten spacing, improve communication and bring greater control to Orlando’s defensive shape, with the Lions conceding just two goals over their past three matches. That stability was evident Saturday, when Orlando limited Houston to 40% possession and forced 10 of the Dynamo’s 18 shots to come from outside the box.

Lions Topple the Crown

Last season, Orlando earned a 3-1 home win in May before rallying from a two-goal second-half deficit to draw at Charlotte in July. Midfielder Martín Ojeda and forward Marco Pašalić each scored in the 2025 season series. Ojeda has been particularly effective against the North Carolina-based club, recording three goals and three assists in six MLS appearances, four of them starts, and adding another goal in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs.

A Fixture in Purple

Forward Iván Angulo is set to reach another landmark in his Orlando City career, with his next appearance marking his 150th match for the Lions across all competitions. The winger has been a model of consistency since arriving in Orlando, becoming one of the most reliable contributors of the Club’s MLS era. Angulo currently ranks third in club history with 35 assists, a reflection of his blend of pace, work rate and creativity down the flank. He is also second among active players in total appearances, trailing only captain Robin Jansson, underscoring both his durability and long-term importance to the team.

Lions vs. Crown

Orlando City SC has historically held the upper hand against Eastern Conference opponent Charlotte FC. The Lions are unbeaten in eight all-time meetings with the North Carolina-based club dating to the 2023 season and have suffered just one loss in MLS regular-season play against Charlotte.

 Youth Surge

The Lions continue to give opportunities to young players. After a series of firsts for multiple young players in a win over USL League One side FC Naples in the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last week, interim head coach Martín Perelman handed 2026 first-round pick Harvey Sarajian and Orlando City B midfielder Ignacio Gómez their first-team debuts as substitutes against Houston Dynamo FC. Homegrown defender Zakaria Taifi made his first MLS start, and forward Justin Ellis played the final 30 minutes for the first team.
