Here are five storylines to watch for Wednesday's match as the Lions host Necaxa
Tjugo Tusen
If he starts Wednesday night’s match against Club Necaxa and plays through the 85th minute, defender and captain Robin Jansson will become the first player in Orlando City history to reach 20,000 minutes played across all competitions. Since joining the club ahead of the 2019 season, Jansson has made 220 starts in 226 appearances, scored seven goals, provided four assists, and played a key role in the Lions’ first MLS-era trophy win, the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Jansson also holds the club records for the most appearances (226) and starts (220) across all competitions, as well as the most appearances (186) and starts (180) in regular season action.
All on the Line
With a convincing 3-1 victory over Atlas F.C. on Saturday night, Orlando City SC climbed to seventh place in the MLS side of the Leagues Cup 2025 table, positioning itself within reach of a spot in the tournament’s Quarterfinals. The win brought the Lions to four points with a +2-goal differential, keeping them firmly in contention as the group stage nears its conclusion. Depending on results elsewhere, a win in their next match, combined with either dropped points from other teams or an improved goal differential, could be enough to secure Orlando City’s place in the knockout rounds for the third consecutive edition of Leagues Cup. The team’s strong performance against Atlas was crucial as the Lions look to advance and continue their pursuit of silverware.
Martín For MVP
With his goal and assist in Saturday night’s 3-1 Leagues Cup win over Liga MX side Atlas F.C., midfielder Martín Ojeda brought his 2025 goal contributions total to 29 across all competitions, 14 goals and 15 assists. That figure broke and extended the club record previously set by former Designated Player Facundo Torres in 2024. Earlier this season, Ojeda surpassed former captain Nani for the club’s MLS single-season goal contributions record. He also extended his club-record streak to 12 consecutive matches with a goal contribution in all competitions. During this run, he’s tallied six goals and 11 assists. Across his last 39 MLS regular season starts, Ojeda has racked up 16 goals and 23 assists, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most productive playmakers.
Marco Marking Late
Croatian forward Marco Pašalić returned to the scoresheet in Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over Atlas F.C., ending a brief goal drought with a dramatic late strike, his first in seven matches. The goal, scored deep into stoppage time, set a new club record for the latest goal in regular time in Orlando City history, clocking in at 102:00. Pašalić’s finish surpassed the previous mark held by former Lion Facundo Torres, whose rebound off a saved penalty at 101:39 in last year’s Audi MLS Cup Playoffs against Charlotte FC sent Orlando through to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. That goal came in the decisive third match of the best-of-three series, cementing Torres’ place in club lore. Now, Pašalić adds his own chapter with a record-breaking moment that could prove pivotal in the Lions’ Leagues Cup campaign.
Dangerous Lions
By scoring three times in their recent Leagues Cup victory over Atlas F.C., Orlando City SC continued to showcase their attacking prowess in the 2025 campaign. The Lions have now netted three or more goals in 10 of their 29 matches across all competitions this season, meaning they’ve hit that mark in over a third of their outings. Saturday’s performance also extended Orlando’s impressive scoring streak to 18 consecutive matches, a run that dates back to a scoreless draw against Chicago Fire FC on May 3 at Soldier Field. The consistent offensive output has been a key factor in the Lions’ strong form, keeping them competitive across both MLS and Leagues Cup play.
Milestone Tracker:
-Martín Ojeda (29) is one goal contribution away from becoming the first player in Orlando City history to have 30 goal contributions in a single season across all competitions.
-Ojeda now has a goal contribution in 12 consecutive matches, extending the previous club record he set.
