Here are five storylines to watch for Saturday's match as the Lions host Atlas:

Rodri Rises Up

Rodrigo Schlegel stepped up as an unexpected offensive contributor in Wednesday night’s Leagues Cup match. The Argentine center back from Remedios de Escalada made his mark in the 5th minute, connecting with a Martín Ojeda corner kick and rising above the Pumas UNAM defense to head the ball past Keylor Navas at the far post. The goal was historic, it became Orlando City’s earliest goal ever in Leagues Cup play, surpassing Dagur Dan Thórhallsson’s 7th-minute strike against CF Montréal in last year’s tournament. It also marked Schlegel’s first career goal in Leagues Cup and his first in any competition since September 2024, when he scored against FC Dallas on the road.

The Battle Continues

Orlando City enters the second of three matches in its 2025 Leagues Cup campaign this week, continuing under the tournament’s revamped format. Starting this season, all Phase One matches feature MLS clubs exclusively facing off against LIGA MX opponents. Each team plays three matches against three different clubs from the opposite league, with matchups determined by the Leagues Cup Ranking and regional alignment. At the end of Phase One, only the top four teams from each league, out of 18 total per league, will advance to the quarterfinals. With such limited spots available, every match carries significant weight in the race for the title.

Martín For MVP

With his assist on Rodrigo Schlegel’s fifth-minute goal against Pumas UNAM in Wednesday night’s Leagues Cup match, Ojeda brought his 2025 goal contributions total to 27 across all competitions, 13 goals and 14 assists. That figure ties the club record set by former teammate and fellow Designated Player Facundo Torres in 2024. Earlier this season, Ojeda surpassed former captain Nani for the club’s MLS single-season goal contributions record. He also extended his club-record streak to 11 consecutive matches with a goal contribution in all competitions. During this run, he’s tallied five goals and 10 assists. Across his last 39 MLS regular season starts, Ojeda has racked up 16 goals and 23 assists, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most productive playmakers.

Surplus Soccer Saturday

Soccer fans in Orlando are in for a treat Saturday night with up to 180 minutes of MLS vs. Liga MX action downtown. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. ET at Inter&Co Stadium, where Orlando City SC (0-0-1, 1 point) will host Atlas F.C. (0-1-0, 0 points) from Guadalajara, Mexico. The match will be broadcast on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, Apple TV+, Univisión, and TUDN. Just an hour after that match concludes, Pumas UNAM (0-1-0, 2 points) from Mexico City will face Atlanta United FC (0-1-0, 0 points) at approximately 9 p.m. ET, also in downtown Orlando.

Rivalry Renewed

The Guadalajara-based club is led by Gonzalo Pineda, former head coach of Atlanta United FC and a longtime fixture of the Mexican National Team. Pineda took over Los Rojinegros in December 2024 after guiding Atlanta to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs twice over four seasons. He also won an MLS Cup in 2019 as an assistant coach with the Seattle Sounders.

Milestone Tracker:

-Martín Ojeda (27) is one goal contribution away from passing Facundo Torres' 27 in 2024 for the most productive season across all competitions in club history.

-Ojeda now has a goal contribution in 11 consecutive matches, extending the previous club record he set.
