Stats & Storylines

- Orlando City opens up its 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign this Wednesday night with a first-time meeting with FC Naples of USL League One. The winner will advance to the Round of 16 to face either the New England Revolution or Rhode Island FC.

- The Lions boast a storied history in the Open Cup dating all the way back to their own USL years, when the 2013 team took down Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City on its way to the quarterfinals. Orlando won the tournament in 2022, knocking out rivals such as Inter Miami, Nashville SC, and Red Bull New York along the way. The Lions also made a semifinal run in 2019, which included the famous “Running of the Wall” quarterfinal against NYCFC, when supporters made a mad dash to the south end of Inter&Co Stadium to support the boys in penalties.

- This year marks the 111th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, America’s oldest ongoing national soccer competition. The first edition of the Cup took place in 1913. In 1999, the United States Soccer Federation honored longtime NASL and MLS executive Lamar Hunt by adding his name to the tournament.

- Orlando’s game in Naples will be its fourth straight away from home. City snapped a three-game losing skid on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Columbus. Marco Pašalić scored his second goal of the season, while Tiago notched his first Orlando City assist.

- The Columbus game marked the return from injury of captain Robin Jansson. The Swede is Orlando City’s most-capped and longest-serving player ever, sporting 239 appearances and over 21,000 minutes in all competitions for the club. After conceding a league-record 16 goals across their previous three road games, Orlando did not allow a single goal in Jansson’s 78 minutes on Sunday.

- FC Naples sits top of the table in USL League One with 13 points through its first six matches of the season. Other notables include Spanish midfielder Marc Torrellas (2g/1a), center back Luca Mastrantonio, and attacker Kevin O’Connor (1g/2a, 3g/7a last season). Naples’ top scorer from 2025, Karsen Henderlong (14g/4a), moved up a division to the Tampa Bay Rowdies of USL Championship over the offseason.

- Orlando City will be Naples’ first-ever MLS opponent. Naples will be the ninth Florida-based club the Lions have faced in their history (Tampa Bay Rowdies, VSI Tampa Bay, Ocala Stampede, Jacksonville Armada, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Miami FC, Miami United FC, Inter Miami CF) and the first based in Southwest Florida.
