Orlando City Earns 2-1 Win at D.C. United

City recap dc

WASHINGTON (September 9, 2017) ā€“ In the second match of a four-game road trip, Orlando City SC (9-12-7, 34 points) earned a 2-1 win over D.C. United (8-16-4, 28 points) Saturday at RFK Stadium. Cyle Larin broke the Clubā€™s all-time scoring record with his 43rd goal, while Dom Dwyer recorded his first assist with City in the MLS era.

ā€œObviously very, very happy to get a result after so long, after feeling like the team has deserved it for so very long,ā€ Lions head coach Jason Kreis said. ā€œTo get the result tonight was probably the most important thing and probably the only important thing.ā€

Kreis came out with a starting XI of Joe Bendik in goal, Donny Toia, Tommy Redding, Seb Hines and Scott Sutter on defense. Antonio Nocerino wore the captainā€™s armband in midfield alongside Cristian Higuita, Giles Barnes and Yoshimar YotĆŗn, while Dwyer and Larin were up front. It was Hinesā€™ 2017 First Team debut and his 50th all-time MLS appearance.

After holding off D.C. early on, Dwyer capitalized on a loose ball and drove down the left wing before ripping a cross for Larin to tap in. The goal was Larin's 11th of the season, and Dwyerā€™s second assist of the season.

Larinā€™s goal was his 43rd with the Lions in just 85 appearances, which breaks the Clubā€™s all-time scoring record previously held by Kevin Molino dating back to Cityā€™s USL Pro days. The Canadian shattered the MLS rookie goal-scoring record with 17 en route to 2015 Rookie of the Year honors and added one more in the U.S. Open Cup. Larin followed that up with 14 in 2016 and 11 in 2017.

Giles Barnes scored the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute when Sutterā€™s service bounced off a United defender and fell to Barnes in front of goal. Barnes made no mistake as he scored his second league goal and third goal as a Lion.

City was reduced to 10 men when Servando Carrasco, who entered the match at the beginning of the second half in place of Higuita, was issued a second yellow card for a challenge at midfield.

United pulled within one in the 89th minute when Kofi Opare finished Deshorn Brownā€™s pass.

The Lions held strong despite being reduced to nine men in second-half stoppage time when Hines was shown a straight red card.

Bendik made four saves in his 62nd consecutive MLS start for City to earn the three points.

City faces Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. ET and finishes the road swing at Portland on Sept. 24. The Lions return to Orlando City Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 27, to host the New England Revolution. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
